Working with Giles Deacon has revealed a collection that delights in our floral heritage, with a nod to utilitarianism and history that Giles explores in his work.
Trelliage was created by juxtaposing two 19th-century naturalistic patterns preserved in the Sanderson archive. A flowering trellis design with wavy branches and flowers provides a classic structure. Then, a selection of exquisitely detailed Victorian botanical illustrations from another archive drawing were interspersed within the trellis pattern, resulting in a design that is "recontextualized classicism" in Giles' words. Victorians were fascinated by nature, natural history, and new discoveries of flora and fauna. These extraordinary, delicate, and remarkable motifs present in Trelliage are a fantastic example, transporting us back in time.
