This hand block-printed design features large sensual tulips and their curled leaves, intertwined with foliage and small pimpernel flowers. The design is a wonderful example of William Morris’s sense of humor, as at first glance the eye is drawn to the dominant and graphic tulip heads, while the design’s name is attributed to the secondary floral detail, the smaller Pimpernel flower. The design layout is almost symmetrical and was hung at Kelmscott Manor, William Morris’s summer home in west Oxfordshire. Pimpernel Grey shows a depth of detail thanks to its multitone palette of grey shades, subtly accented by golden notes represented by the flowers that weave throughout the design.
